    Islands Reflect & Review

1 May 2026 (by Stefan Mitsis (Stefan))

We have really enjoyed our learning this week and made the most of the lovely weather by taking lots of our learning outdoors.

In topic, the children explored stamps and their significance within the postal system. We looked closely at the Penny Black, the first postage stamp, and discussed how it featured the silhouette of Queen Victoria. This linked back to our learning about Rowland Hill, who introduced this system and transformed how post was sent. The children were fascinated to learn how this simple idea made communication more accessible for everyone. They also demonstrated their understanding through creative play projects, where they applied their knowledge independently—designing, role-playing, and explaining their ideas with confidence and imagination.

In PE, we have continued developing our tennis skills. The children have been working on control and coordination, learning how to carefully bounce the ball with accuracy and pass it using a racket. They have practised controlling the ball, keeping it steady, and beginning to understand how to move and position themselves effectively. It has been great to see their confidence grow as they develop these fundamental skills.

In music, the children have been learning songs from Hansel and Gretel and have made significant progress. They are beginning to sing with more confidence, expression, and accuracy, remembering both the lyrics and melodies. It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm and enjoyment during these sessions. Please do ask your child to sing the songs at home—they will love sharing their learning with you, and practising outside of school will really help to build their confidence even further.

It has been another fantastic week of learning, and we are very proud of the children’s continued effort and enthusiasm.
