The Barrier Reef Reflect and Review

6 March 2026 (by Laura Thornton (LauraT))

From castles and dragons to counting, measuring and storytelling, it’s been a busy week full of creativity and discovery in the Barrier Reef.

As mathematicians, the Reception children have been continuing their learning with White Rose Maths, focusing on building the numbers 6, 7 and 8. They have also been developing their understanding of measurement by comparing and measuring height, length and time, using practical activities and discussion to explore how things can be taller, shorter, longer or quicker.
Our Pre-School children have been learning about numbers 3 and 4, practising recognising the numerals, counting objects and developing one-to-one correspondence as they count. They have also been exploring early counting skills through practical activities and games.

As readers and writers, the Reception children have continued practising their Read Write Inc. sounds, blending CVC words and reading their ditty sheets and reading books. This week our Drawing Club book focus was Zog and the children produced wonderful, detailed drawings of Zog, thinking carefully about the different features of the dragon and adding lots of imaginative detail. We also explored the poem Popcorn, and listened to the story **The Town Musicians of Bremen. Some children began dragon writing, where the children used their phonics knowledge to write words and simple sentences. The children have also been practising a special song for Mother’s Day ready for our upcoming celebration. A highlight of the week was celebrating World Book Day. The children enjoyed coming to school in their wonderful costumes and sharing their favourite stories with their friends. Throughout the day we celebrated our love of reading by exploring different books, talking about our favourite characters and enjoying lots of stories together. It was lovely to see the children so excited about books and storytelling, helping to inspire a lifelong love of reading.

As historians, the Reception children have been learning about castles and how some people lived long ago. They explored who lived in castles such as kings, queens, knights and servants, and discussed the different jobs people had. The children learned about important castle features including moats, drawbridges, turrets and battlements, and compared castles to their own homes, thinking about how life in the past was different from today.
Our Pre-School children also explored castles through an imaginative pretend trip to a castle. They looked at pictures of castles and talked about the moat, drawbridge, towers and the Great Hall, while pretending to travel around the castle and act out the roles of kings, queens, knights and cooks. This helped them begin to understand that people lived differently long ago.

As artists and designers, the children enjoyed *designing and making crowns fit for a king or queen, linking to our castles theme. They also had the opportunity to draw and paint castles using water colours to create a colourful wash.

As geographers and digital explorers, the Reception children used technology to explore Warwick Castle through a 360° immersive virtual tour, helping them to see what real castles look like and identify their different features.
Our Pre-School children also explored castles through pictures and imaginative play, beginning to understand how places can look different and how people lived in the past.

As healthy citizens, both Reception and Pre-School children learned about oral health and how to look after their teeth. We talked about foods that are good and bad for our teeth and practised how to brush our teeth correctly. The children learned that they should brush their teeth for two minutes, twice a day using a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.

As active learners, Reception children have been developing their fine motor and early writing skills through handwriting practice, Peg Chat, Pen Disco and Squiggle Me Into a Writer activities.
Pre-School children have been building their physical development through Danny Go, Pen Disco, Write Dance and Tatty Bumpkins Yoga, helping to strengthen the muscles needed for early writing and coordination.
