    Oceans Reflect and Review

    21 November 2025 (by Beth I)

This week has been wonderfully busy and enriching for all!

As mathematicians, we have continued to develop our subtraction skills, particularly subtracting across 100 and 1,000. The children have been learning how to exchange confidently when digits in the smaller number are larger than those in the bigger number. Alongside this, they applied their skills to a multi-step number problem-solving challenge, where they had to decide which operations to use and explain why their method worked.

As writers, we have been reflecting on the new characters in Iliona. The children focused on each character’s intentions, behaviour, and motivations, thinking carefully about why they act the way they do. They discussed how characters’ choices affect the plot and how Iliona’s perspective influences the way events are described. Their discussions were thoughtful, reflective, and increasingly evidence-based.

During our writing workshop, we have continued to explore the key features of an information text. The children identified and practised using: present tense, to describe facts that are true now, conjunctions, to join ideas and add detail and topic-specific vocabulary, which helps the reader understand the subject clearly.

Our trip on Wednesday was a fantastic opportunity for all the children. At the Ashmolean Museum, the pupils had great fun exploring the exhibits, handling historical artefacts, and making connections with what we’ve been learning in class. Their curiosity and enthusiasm was wonderful to see, and many children commented on how inspiring it was to see real objects from ancient civilisations. It was very lovely to hear staff at the museum and members of the public comment on how beautifully they behaved - we were very proud!

Those who visited Christ Church Cathedral were absolutely blown away by the beauty and scale of the building. The children were captivated by its history and architecture as they sang in the cathedral with incredible focus and respect. It was a truly memorable experience for everyone involved.

Thank you to all parents/carers who supported us on this trip.

    Homelearning

Children have been sent home with home-learning tasks to complete.  Please continue to support your child in getting these completed as well as daily reading.

    Notes

Next week is assessment week. It is imperative that all children are in school on time to allow for a relaxed start and so that we are able to prepare them. The school gates open at 8:10 and closes at 8:20, by this time learning has already started.

We have spoken to the children lots about sitting assessments and how they can make us feel. As well as checking for their understanding, this is an opportunity for us to support children to learn the skills needed to take tests. The children will be sitting their assessments in the classroom with a known adult. We will continue to support children throughout the week and additional breaks have been timetabled.

As we are an indoor/outdoor school, unless it is unsafe to do so, we will be going outside for play. This is an important part of their learning experience. Therefore, please ensure that they have the necessary clothing: coats, gloves, hats, scarfs and appropriate footwear (named). If you have any questions or need any of these items please contact us via the Oceans email.
