    Oceans Reflect and Review

    16 November 2025 (by Beth I)

    Mathematics
As mathematicians, we have been subtracting two- and four-digit numbers, including calculations where we need to exchange across 10 and 100. The children have been working hard to apply their understanding of place value to solve these trickier subtraction problems. We have also been emphasising clear layout and careful checking, and it has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they tackle more complex calculations.

    English
In English, we have continued reading Iliona and explored the character of Nero and his infamous baths. The class has had rich and thoughtful discussions about his behaviour, motivations. The children have enjoyed sharing ideas, asking questions, and debating their interpretations.

    Writing Workshop
During the writing workshop, we have been organising and sorting the key features of information texts. The children matched the key features with the right example, we have also discussed why each element is important. We  focused on structure and layout—thinking about headings, subheadings, introductions, paragraphs, and how information is presented clearly to help the reader. This groundwork will support the children as they begin crafting their own information texts in the coming weeks.

    Science

We have continued our investigations to find out who stole the diamond earrings. This week we looked at reflections and why certain colours are more reflective. Next week, we will complete our experiments by looking at the different colours in light and hopefully we will find the criminal!

    Notes

We are looking forward to our trips to the Ashmolean on Wednesday. All children have been allocated a group and they are aware of what these are. Group 1 and 2 will go to the Ashmolean for workshops, Group will go to Christchurch followed by a self-led visit to the Ashmolean.

Please send your child with appropriate clothing, footwear, a packed lunch and a water bottle. Children in Group 3 do not need a packed lunch, as they will eat at Christchurch, but they do need a water bottle.

Thank you to all the parents who have already returned their permission slips. If you haven’t yet returned yours, please do so as soon as possible, or send an email to Oceans.

We are accepting donations of school clothes, coats and shoes. If you have any of these and you no longer need them, please bring them into school for us to share out. If you need any clothing, please email Oceans or speak to your child’s class teacher.

    Homelearning

Children have been sent home with home-learning tasks to complete.  Please continue to support your child in getting these completed as well as daily reading.
