Barrier Reef Reflect and Review14 November 2025 (by Laura Thornton (LauraT)) |
This week has been full of rich learning, creativity, and thoughtful conversations as we explored our Poppies focus and continued to play, create, and imagine together.
As historians, the children have been learning about Remembrance Day, thinking gently about why people wear poppies and how we remember those who helped keep us safe a long time ago as well as the people who continue to keep people safe today. We watched the CBeebies Poppies animation and talked about feelings, bravery, and peace. The children were incredibly thoughtful during our quiet reflection time, showing great empathy and care.
As artists, the children explored mixing different shades of primary colours, using paintbrushes and rollers on large sheets of paper. They loved experimenting, noticing how colours change when they are mixed, and took great pride in creating bold, expressive artwork. This linked beautifully with our Poppy Art, where the children looked closely at the shape and colour of poppies and created their own meaningful pieces for our class “Remembrance displays.”
As storytellers, we used props during our Tales Toolkit session to tell our own stories, building confidence in speaking and listening. The children also enjoyed sharing books linked to our theme and practising songs for our upcoming Nativity performance, which they are already singing with enthusiasm!
As engineers and designers, the children have been busy in the construction area, working with Mobilo to create imaginative models. They explained their ideas proudly—cars, towers, rockets, and even dinosaur traps! We saw wonderful teamwork as children joined their models together and discussed how to improve stability and shape.
Our small-world area has been home to dinosaurs, storytellers, and adventurers this week. Children created dinosaur lands complete with mountains, caves, and rivers, using language inspired by their learning: “dangerous,” “stomping,” “hiding,” and “protecting.” These rich play moments are helping develop narrative skills and vocabulary.
As musicians, the children have begun learning the songs for our Nativity show, practising rhythm, repetition, and performance skills. Their confidence grows each day, and we cannot wait to share this special performance with you soon.
As communicators, we have been expanding our vocabulary through stories, discussions, and expressive play. The children listened carefully, shared their thoughts about Remembrance, and talked about similarities and differences between the past and now. The Reception children also learnt a Poem with actions about a rabbit.
We marked Anti-Bullying Week by talking about how to show kindness to one another. The children shared ideas about helping, including others, using gentle hands, and saying kind words. They learnt that “Kindness is our power of good”, and we saw them putting this into practice throughout the week with lovely friendship moments.
It has been a wonderful week of learning; we are so proud of the children for their curiosity, kindness, and creativity throughout Week 2. Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to sharing more exciting learning with you next week!
Next Week, we will be thinking about the wonderful story 'Peepo' and examining how the things we use in our homes have evolved.
Reminders:
We’ve noticed that lots of children are short of spare clothes at school. Please take a moment to check and top up your child’s spare set. As the weather is becoming wetter, the children sometimes need to change after playing outside. Thank you.
If your child is in Pre-school, we kindly ask that you provide an all-in-one waterproof for them to wear for outside play and forest school.
Payment and permission slips for the Nick Cope concert/Pegasus theatre trip are due on 20th November. Reception payment is £13.30, and Pre-School payment is £2.60. We accept cash in a named envelope or you can pay via My Child At School App.
Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to sharing more exciting learning with you next week!
