    Barrier Reef Reflect and Review

7 November 2025 (by Laura Thornton (LauraT))

As historians, the children found out all about Guy Fawkes and why we celebrate Bonfire Night. They looked carefully at pictures from long ago and talked about how things were different in the past compared to today. Together, they learned the rhyme “Remember, remember the 5th of November” and discovered that we remember Guy Fawkes every year with fireworks and bonfires.

As safety superheroes, the children talked about how to stay safe around fireworks and bonfires. Through songs, stories and role play with “Firefighter Fred,” they learned important safety rules like “Hold your sparkler away!” and “Stand back!” They even created their own fire safety posters to remind everyone how to celebrate safely.

As mathematicians, the children explored numbers with “It’s Me 1, 2, 3” and enjoyed making and spotting patterns using natural objects. They have been practising careful counting and beginning to understand what numbers up to five really mean.

As artists, everyone had lots of fun creating firework splatter paintings and collage pictures, experimenting with colours and techniques to make their artwork sparkle and shine – just like the fireworks in the sky!

As musicians, the children began learning songs for their upcoming Nativity performance and loved joining in with the actions and music. The Reception children also had fun at musical theatre this week, singing their favourite song 'You Got A Friend In Me'

As talkers and storytellers, the children helped use props to retell simple stories in our Tales Toolkit sessions following the Tales story structure, 'Character, Setting, Problem and Solution'. They asked questions and shared their own ideas using new vocabulary.

In PSHE, we focused on keeping safe – both at home and outdoors – and talked about how people in our community, like firefighters, help to keep us safe.

It’s been a fantastic first week back. We are so proud of how confidently the children have returned to their learning and we look forward to more adventures next week!

    Reminders:

Please can we remind everyone that children should not bring toys or resources home from school. These items are for all children to enjoy during their time in class, supporting their play and learning.

We’ve noticed that a few things have gone missing this week, especially toy cars, and we’d really appreciate your help in checking at home in case any school items have accidentally been taken home.

If you find anything that belongs to school, please return it as soon as possible so we can continue to use and share our resources in class. Thank you so much for your support and understanding,

A reminder for Reception parents to return the payment and permission slip for the Nick Cope concert and Pegasus Theatre trip. If you have misplaced your letter, please let us know and we’ll be happy to provide another copy. Thank you!

    Coming up:

The Barrier Reef Christmas Nativity Show, 10th December 10-11 am at St Mary and St John Church, Cowley Road-  families and friends are all invited to watch the performance.

Coral Reef Reception Children, Pegasus Theatre Visit Thursday 18th December 9.45 am

    Next Week;

For anti-bullying week, we will be focusing on kindness as our power of good and talking about how we can show kindness to others.

The children will be thinking about Remembrance Day and learning why poppies are such a special symbol. Through stories, discussion and creative activities, they’ll explore how wearing a poppy helps us to remember and say thank you to the brave people who helped keep us safe in the past and today.

Have a great weekend, stay safe and have fun if you are enjoying fireworks this weekend.
