Oceans Reflect and Review17 October 2025 (by Beth I) |
This week has been very busy and exciting!
As mathematicians, some of us have started adding two four-digit numbers, even when crossing over tens and hundreds. We practised setting out our calculations carefully using column addition and made sure to carry digits correctly. We also discussed how important it is to understand the value of each digit in a number, especially when crossing over into the next column. This helped us build our knowledge of place value and number relationships. Some of us also challenged ourselves with word problems and multi-step addition questions.
As writers, we have planned and written our brochures based on Skara Brae. We focused on structuring our ideas clearly, using persuasive language, and choosing vocabulary that would interest the reader. We practised including headings, subheadings, and bullet points to make our brochures easy to read. We also experimented with rhetorical questions, adjectives, and emotive language to make our writing more engaging.
As scientists, we began our new unit on electricity. We began the week by exploring different electrical appliances and sorted them into two groups — plug-in and rechargeable. Then, we had great fun creating our very own circuits using crocodile clips, batteries, bulbs, motors, and buzzers. We learned how to make a circuit work and experimented with materials that did and didn’t conduct electricity. We thought carefully about why some materials, like metal, let electricity flow, while others, like plastic, do not.
Notes -
On Monday, we will have a special visit from the author Samantha Rodgers! We are super excited to welcome her to St Frideswide and hear about her work and inspirations.
Next week is RE Week, and we will be answering our inquiry question of: “Does joining the Khalsa make someone a better Sikh?”
Letters were given out earlier in the week for our trip to the Ashmolean next term. Please return the slips to school and send the payment either by cash in an envelope or via our payment portal.
School will break for half term on Wednesday 22nd October 2025 and re-open on Tuesday 4th November 2025.
Have a lovely weekend.
