    Oceana Reflect and Review

    10 October 2025 (by Beth I)

    Where is the time going?

As mathematicians, we have now moved on to addition and subtraction. We’ve been using our strong place value knowledge to help us solve problems accurately and efficiently. The children have been learning to add and subtract numbers that cross 10, 100, and 1,000, using different strategies to help them understand what happens when we “bridge” these boundaries. They are developing both their mental and written methods, learning when to use each one and why checking their answers carefully is so important. These skills are key foundations for their future maths learning. Next week, some of us will begin to add up two 4-digits numbers.

As readers and writers, we have started exploring the key features of brochures. The children have been learning how brochures are used to inform and persuade, identifying how layout, headings, persuasive language, and images work together to attract the reader’s attention. We have looked at examples of real brochures and discussed what makes them effective. Next, the children will begin to plan their own informative brochures, applying what they’ve learned about structure and language.

In our SPaG (spelling, punctuation, and grammar) lessons, we’ve been focusing on using punctuation accurately, expanding our vocabulary, and ensuring our writing is clear and engaging. The children are becoming more confident at editing and improving their work independently.

As geographers, we have been exploring maps, atlases, and compasses. The children have learned how to use these tools to locate places and understand directions. They have also been applying their learning by creating and following maps of the different rooms and spaces around our school — a fun and practical way to develop their map-reading and navigation skills.

Teachers have assigned tasks on Sumdog and/or sent sheets home. Please support your child to complete the set tasks and continue to read daily.

Please can you ensure that your child is bringing their school library book daily to help us promote the importance of reading, and so that staff can ensure that children are on the correct book band.

    Have a lovely weekend.
