    Oceans Reflect and Review

    3 October 2025 (by Beth I)

Another busy week and lots more learned!

As mathematicians, we wrapped up our learning on place value and rounding. We practiced identifying the value of digits in large numbers and improved at rounding to the nearest 10, 100, and 1,000. Next, we will be moving on to addition and subtraction, where we will continue to use our place value knowledge to solve problems and develop both mental and written strategies.
As readers and writers, we finished our class text and reflected on how the characters changed and the themes that emerged. Our discussions and activities helped us deepen both our comprehension and writing skills. We also had the fantastic opportunity to welcome John Dougherty into school. His visit truly inspired us as readers and writers — he shared stories, writing tips, and showed us how creativity and imagination can bring words to life. It was wonderful to see the children so engaged and motivated. Moving forward, we will begin a new unit on brochure writing, where children will learn how to inform and persuade through carefully chosen language and layout.
As historians, we looked into how Roman Britain started with the invasions of Caesar and Claudius. We considered why Claudius was more successful as well as their motivations. We then moved on to learn about Boudicca and her rebellion against the Romans. There were lots of discussions about her actions and whether they were justified. We ended the week reflecting on how the Romans changed the lives of Celts.

    AOB:
We were especially excited to welcome Banji Alexander, who kindly agreed to visit our school after receiving the children’s persuasive letters inviting him to our school – a wonderful example of how their writing can have a real impact. More information will follow on Monday regarding how to purchase Banji’s books. Please see his reply to the children below!

    Hi all,

    Please share with your class.

    Dear St Frideswides,
Thank you for your wonderful letters which I received recently. It was very kind of you to invite me to visit your school. I have been ever so busy on my book tour and working on new writing projects; there is very little availability in my diary. I’m really sorry, it doesn’t look like I’d be able to make it down to your school.
Hang on a minute...let me just double check my diary again. I suppose I could move this...there, and that...there...which would allow me to do...this...there! Ahh! You may just be in luck!
Name of your school, I would LOVE to visit your school. Fortunately, I have found a space in my diary, and I WILL be visiting you all October 13th!
However, I have one request! You may not know it yet, but I enjoy wearing fancy hats and fancy footwear. I would love for you to do the same when I visit your school...but before you’re granted this very special privilege, your class has to prove you’re avid readers! Your class teachers will tell you all about the Avid Reader Fancy Hat & Footwear Charts!
Good luck...and see you all soon!

    Yours sincerely,
    Banji Alexander

This week, we also celebrated the wonderful homework that has been completed. It was lovely to see how children have been sharing their learning at home – thank you for your continued support.

    Have a lovely weekend!
