    Rockpool Reflect and Review

2 October 2025 (by Lisa Brown (LisaB))

What a great term we are having! We are such busy learners!

The Rockpool class have been so busy, from learning new sounds and taking part in guided reading sessions to developing their physical skills in the sports hall.

In phonics we are learning about the letter sound 'a'. The children have explored many ways in which they have developed their understanding of the letter sound 'a'. We also had a wonderful time with the author John Dougherty, who came to share his new book with us 'There's a pig up my nose'. The children sat beautifully as they listened to the funny story, sharing their knowledge of animals, the sounds they make and some of the animal signs. They were delighted by the guitar and watched with fascination as he sang his song. What an amazing opportunity!

In maths we have been learning about shapes. The children have been identfying and recognising 2D shaopes. They have explored the shapes in their play, drawn around different shapes and begun to think about the different properties of shapes. We went on a shape hunt looking for squares, circles, triangles and rectangles.

In our topic session we have started to think about harvest festival. The children have been trying new foods as we introduce new flavours. We also thought about healthy food and the children have made wonderful pumpkin painting art work.

As we look at healthy eating we are asking parents to please think about lunches. Whilst the children enjoy a sweet treat, and we are happy for them to have one, we would like to also encourage fresh fruits and vegetables too. We understand that our Rockpool children don't always like a range of foods but we fiind that they do enjoy breadsticks and raisins in school. We are trying to support the children to extend their sensory diet with both soft and crunchy foods.

Next week we will be focused on our personal, social and emotional development as we start to think about our emotional reactions and the zones of emotional regulation.
