    Explorers relfect and review

15 June 2025 (by Beth Taylor (Beth))

Another busy week in St Fred’s.

We started the week with art where we continued with our houses. We used plaster of paris to secure our models and began to paint them once they were dry.

On Tuesday, we had a great day at Somerville College. During our Neuroscience session, we had the opportunity to look at a number of different brains, including a monkey and a dog. Be sure to ask your child which was their favourite!

During our design and technology lesson, the children have been making cardboard gears, which required them to measure and cut accurately. We look forward to continuing this project in week B.

In music, we will once again be working with Oxford song. This week we have started   focusing on creating a piece of music which will include a chant.

In RE, we have continued to answer our enquiry question and have learnt about ‘The Sabbath Day’. Which is a day of rest and worship observed by the Jewish community and some Christians.

This week's independent writing was based on the title called ‘The Experiment" The children have written their own stories whilst focusing on using modal verbs, contractions and accurate spelling and punctuation.

Endeavour have begun their new text - Shackleton’s Journey and have begun learning about Antarctica. Several of the children have taken part in bikeability and have achieved level 2 in their cycling! In Maths, we’ve started our second decimals unit.

In Beagle we have begun looking at the book “The Dam” by David Almond. We have explored the impacts within the images and how the author has chosen specific language to impact the reader in specific ways.

In maths we have been looking at decimals, focusing on place value and finding decimals that add up to 1.

Next week is drowning prevention week. On Monday, Year 5 will be taking part in the drowning prevention session at swimming so please ensure the children bring with them:

    • Loose fitting light weight pyjamas and their swimwear to wear underneath - no onesies or heavy tracksuits.
    • Bring hats and goggles although we will not wear goggles for the survival part of the session.

On Tuesday, Year 5 will be going to St Annes for their Science day, please make sure your child arrives promptly on time as we will be leaving at 8:30, they will need to bring a packed lunch as well. We will be walking to and from St Annes College in town and arriving back before the end of the school day.

Year 5 will have assessment week next week, they will be sitting SATs style tests during the week to prepare them for year 6. The papers will be shared with you with their end of year report at the end of term.
