Anemones Weekly Reflect and Review13 June 2025 (by Laura Thornton (LauraT)) |
Summer 2 Week 2
This week in nursery, we’ve been diving into lots of exciting sea-themed activities while continuing to build on key skills in maths, communication, and creativity. Here’s a look at what we’ve been learning and exploring together.
In maths, we’ve been busy exploring numbers and how they can be built and split in different ways. The children enjoyed using large and small Numicon pieces to see how smaller numbers can come together to make a bigger one. We also used bean bags and hoops to physically separate amounts, helping us understand how numbers can be shared and recombined.
In our home corner, we transformed the space into a seafood restaurant. The children really embraced their roles—waiters, chefs, and customers—and practised turn-taking and role negotiation.
Our tuff tray was filled with green pasta ‘seaweed,’ oobleck, tweezers, and pebbles. The children explored the textures using spoons and tools, describing what they saw and felt.
At the creative table, we focused on tissue paper rocks, fish stamping using paint dabbers, and making special Father’s Day cards. The children loved ripping and scrunching tissue to build their rocks, and used vibrant colours to decorate fish scales. The Father’s Day cards were especially sweet, using their handprints and heart shapes.
In the sand tray, children explored natural materials like shells, crabs, and starfish. There was lots of scooping and digging while talking about what they discovered. It was a great opportunity to use all their senses while exploring the textures of the seaside.
During our “Big 3 and Me” session, we learned new British Sign Language signs for emotions like patient, impatient, and annoyed. We talked about how we might feel in certain situations and what our ‘inside weather’ might be like—building our emotional literacy.
In NELI this week, we read Firefly Home, a lovely story about a firefly trying to find her way back. We explored new vocabulary like lost, spot, fly, and fast and enjoyed engaging activities to help us understand the words more.
Toilet Training Drop-In Session – Tuesday 18th June
We’d love for you to join us for our next Toilet Training Drop-In Session with Tracey and Charlotte on Tuesday 18th June at 8:10am, meeting at the main reception.
We’ll also be joined by a visiting nurse team, who will be available to offer advice and support around toilet training—an ideal opportunity for families preparing for this next step, especially if your child is starting Reception soon.
Everyone is welcome, even if you're just curious or have a few questions. We’ll have tea and coffee ready too!
Hot Weather Reminder
The weather is expected to be very hot next week. We’ll be limiting our outdoor time in the afternoons due to the high temperatures, but we will be enjoying plenty of water play! Please make sure your child comes to nursery with:
- A full water bottle
- A sunhat
- Suncream already applied (and a labelled bottle if you’d like us to reapply)
- Plenty of spare clothes
We hope you have a lovely weekend!
