Islands Reflect and Review25 April 2025 (by Lauren Arbour (Lauren)) |
What a great start to the Summer term for all of the children in Islands! All children came back eager to learn and ready to explore their new topic ‘Amazing Places and Spaces’.
This week as geographers, we have been exploring mapping, learning that maps and plans are representations of space in two dimensions and flat images. Together they created a plan for their classroom, thinking about the relative position of different objects in the room, and representing 3-D space in a 2-D diagram.
We explored what ‘bird’s eye view’ meant and explored Digi Maps to locate familiar spaces that we visit in and outside of school. We looked at Oxford, London and even found some known locations such as Florence Park, Oxford United Football Stadium and some beautiful buildings in Oxford.
Next week we will extend our mapping skills beyond the classroom to the whole school grounds. The children will select locations to photograph within the school grounds and then position these locations on a map of the school. They will also use compass points to give directions to each place and create a map of the school.
Important Information/Dates:
Summer Trip -
A letter will be going home on Monday 28th April- please look out for this letter in your child’s book bag.
Weather -
The weather is due to warm up this week. Please ensure all children have sun cream on in the mornings and are sent into school with a hat and a water bottle. Please ensure hats and water bottles are labelled with your child's name.
Please make sure your child comes into school in weather appropriate school uniform - Maroon/Burgundy or Pink summer dresses or white polo shirts or school PE top with grey bottoms - charcoal grey shorts, skirts or trousers. Black bottoms are not part of our school uniform. Summer dresses should NOT be red- this is not our school colours.
Homelearning -
We are currently reviewing what homework looks like in Islands for our children. This week we will send the purple books and maths books as normal. There will be a updated letter outlining exactly what will be offered next week.
Have a great weekend,
Islands team.
