Coral Reef Reflect and Review25 April 2025 (by Laura Thornton (LauraT)) |
It was lovely to welcome back all the children on Tuesday after the half-term break. We have packed in lots of exciting learning this week.
This term our Topic is called 'A Bug's Life'. Please visit our class page on the website to see our topic web, which will give you an overview of what the children will be learning this term.
In Drawing Club we have been drawing and writing about the story 'Superworm' and coming up with our own minibeast superhero characters.
As Mathematicians, we have been practising counting forwards and backwards and matching amounts. We have been revisiting doubling and halving number facts using counting objects to support our understanding. We have been practising finding the two number friends that make 5. We have been developing a deep understanding of 9 and 10, using 10 frames and counting cubes. We played an eye-spy game where we had to spot all the pictures that showed 9 and 10. We have begun to explore how 10 can be split into two smaller numbers: the number bonds to 10. We used ten-frame games with counters where children found the missing parts of 10. We played a “Mystery Bag” game where we picked objects from a bag, counted them, and said how many more to make 10. The children will need to be secure in their number bonds for 5 and 10 by the end of the Reception year, so it would be fantastic if they could recall these at home.
As part of our Topic learning, we learnt about what an insect is and looked at some pictures. We drew pictures of insects and used our phonics knowledge to write labels for the different body parts, for example, eyes, thorax, and head.
Our Poem from the Poetry Basket was 'If I were so Very Small', which the children have learnt to say with actions.
Next week, we will be welcoming some baby caterpillars into our classroom, which we will watch grow and change into butterflies over the next couple of weeks.
As Mathematicians, we will be starting our 'Sunflower Challenge' as part of this project we will be learning about seeds and plants, measuring, noticing and subitising, shape and patterns, 5 and 10 frames , numbers to 20 nd lots more. We can't wait to get started.
In Drawing Club our focused story will be 'The Giant Jam Sandwich'
In Topic we will be learning about bug habitats and building bug houses to put in our our garden and writing instructions to make a Giant Jam Sandwich.
Next week the weather is due to get very warm and sunny, please can you put once a day sunscreen on your child before school and ensure they have a sunhat or cap to wear outside.
On Tuesday there will be a 'drop-in' session at school for parents about sleep routines for children. If this is something you are interested in or you need support and advice, we encourage you to come along. The drop-in session starts at 8.10. Please come to the main school entrance.
Coming Up:
Wednesday 7th Bug Bonanza at the Museum of Natural History, Oxford, for the Reception children. If you have offered to be a parent helper, please remind us so that we can add you to our list. Thank you!
