Explorers reflect and review17 January 2025 (by Beth Taylor (Beth)) |
Did you know the tsunami in March 2011 actually moved the entire country of Japan? Just one of many interesting facts we’ve learnt this week.
This week in Explorers we have been continuing with our focus on tsunamis. We’ve looked at the reasons they happen as well as the risks involved. As both geographers and historians, we have been learning about the 2011 tsunami that hit Japan - the worst in recorded history. We have learnt about why Japan would experience so many tsunamis, understanding why it happened, and the effects of it.
As writers, in Endeavour we have been continuing with sentence stacking using Micheal Morpurgo’s “Kensuke’s Kingdom”, and wrote our own sea themed poems. In Beagle we have been looking at how to write playscripts, focusing on the differences between stage directions and the dialogue. In Discovery we have written and presented our speeches from the perspective of Edmund Hillary. We have started to look at a formal letter from William Emmerson and have been answering the following questions about the text: What is the purpose of the letter? Why might it have been written? Who is the intended audience?
As Mathematicians, in Discovery, we have continued with fractions adding to a mixed number. In Beagle and Endeavour we have been working on multiplication, focusing on both grid and column methods to multiply 2 and 3 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers.
On Wednesday we took part in the Speak Out! Stay Safe! workshop, run by the NSPCC. We learnt about the rights that children have, what these mean, what they will look like (and what it might look like if these rights are not being met), and how to speak out if we need to. Everyone who took part brought home a handout for them to reflect on what makes us feel safe and happy, with some useful information.
