Coral Reef Reflect and Review17 January 2025 (by Laura Thornton (LauraT)) |
It has been a little quieter this week and we have been missing our unwell friends. Our learning and explorations have continued, however.
Our week began with a mindful session about being happy and the children thought about things that make them happy how it feels when we are tearful or disappointed and what our 'inside weather' might look like for each of these emotions.
In drawing club we thought about a baby penguin called Geronimo who thought penguins could fly. The children completed a series of drawings and we are encouraging the children to use their phonic knowledge to write words, captions and sentences to make something magical happen to their pictures.
In Topic we looked at world maps and located where the Emporere Penguins live and learnt that it is a place called Antarctica. The children were surprised to discover that Polar Bears don't live with the penguins and in fact, live in the North Pole. The children were interested in locating the country they were born in or where they had travelled to, this led us to look at some of the flags for the different countries. later on in the week we watched some drone footage of Antarctica and talked about what it looked like, the children learnt that it is one of the coldest and windiest places on earth so people can not live there. We discussed the differences between Antarctica and Oxford. Afterwards, we watched the 'Go Jetters' head out on an adventure in Antarctica. The Go Jetters episode inspired some writing from the children which we will continue to work on next week.
In PE we became Jack Frost and performed leaping and jumping movements with our imaginary wands to cover everything in frost.
In Maths, we have been learning how the amounts of 4 and 5 are made up of smaller amounts. In Maths we call this 'part, whole' for example 4 is the whole amount but it can be made up of 2+2 or 3+1 or 4+0- these are the parts. We have continued to develop our understanding of halving using a range of resources, knowing that when an amount is halved it goes into 2 equal parts.
On our fine motor table, the children have been developing their scissor skills by cutting out different penguin body parts to stick together to make penguins.
Next week as scientists we we will be investigating how to melt ice.
We will be venturing into the world of 'PIngu' for our drawing club sessions and taking part in some exciting music sessions with our teachers and our musical friends from the Oxford Song organisation.
Please continue to support your child with their reading homework. It makes a difference to their progress if they can practise at home and school.
We hope you all have a restful weekend whatever you do
