    Islands Weekly Reflect and Review

13 October 2023 (by Lauren Arbour (Lauren))

As scientists this week, Islands have been exploring the basic parts of the human body and the body part associated with each sense.

We started the week by naming and labelling each body part, we even had a go at learning some of the names of the body parts in different languages with our peers. Once we had named the body parts, we carried out an investigation by measuring body parts using a variety of different resources- pencils, cubes, bead strings and rulers.

We then explored our beautiful garden and used our senses to hear, see, touch and smell. We spent time in the peaceful log seating area - closing our eyes and listening to the sound of the wind, children playing and music coming from Rockpool.

Next week we will take on the role of artists in our explore and draw unit. The children will be introduced to the idea that artists can be collectors: they go out into the world, look at things in new ways, and bring things back to the classroom to inspire their art. Islands will explore observational drawing and experimental mark making, and think about how they can use composition to create their artwork.

If your child would like to collect natural objects over the weekend to inspire their art work in class next week, they are more than welcome to. We will be exploring the school grounds to collect materials, but they might want to bring different materials that others won’t have to inspire their art.
