    Explorers weekly reflect and review

8 September 2023 (by Beth Taylor (Beth))

What an amazing first week back we have had in Explorers. The children have settled back into routine well and have already achieved great learning.

    This week:

In Maths, we have focused on roman numerals and place value, learning about number values and how to use very large numbers - including multi-millions.

In English we have begun looking at the story of Goodnight Mr Tom, reading the first 3 chapters and sentence stacking ideas surrounding the point where Willie is allowed to read comics and books of his choice for the first time.

For our free write we wrote a story. We had a picture prompt to help our ideas but could write any short story that had a clear plot progression. All of the children worked incredibly hard on these.

In topic, we have begun to look at WWII, developing our knowledge of key events in chronological order and looking at the work of Winston Churchill, focusing on the difference that a good leader can make.

    Next week:

Next week we are going on our trip to Buscot. Thank you to everyone who has given their permission and paid so far. The Buscot trip allows the children to experience how spies worked during WWII and some of the training that soldiers went through at Buscot itself. This is an amazing, hands-on experience for the children that will truly deepen their understanding of what happened in this time period.

Tuesday 12th September - Shackleton and Cook

    Wednesday 13th September - Scott

All children will need to be in uniform and will need to bring a packed lunch. For those entitled to free school meals, a school packed lunch can be provided. If you are still to pay, please pay on pupil asset over the weekend, or in cash on Monday in a named envelope. Thank you.

Swimming will be running on Monday for year 5’s. Please make sure that they have their full kit as outlined in the letter that was sent out at the end of last term.

Year 6 will be doing PE on Monday morning and therefore should be in correct PE kit as set out on the website.

    Homework:

Purple homework books have been given out today. Please begin to fill in the reading log with your child as they read daily (stuck in the back) and have a look at the topic grid. This can be found on Learn, under Explorers and after school home learning. Sumdog and Reading Buddy logins are the same as the children’s old ttrs login details. We have had some technical difficulties with this today so please let us know if your child has issues accessing their account and we will sort this early next week. Login print outs will be reissued on Monday.

Enjoy the glorious weather this weekend.
