St Fred's High reflect and review

19 June 2023 (by Beth Taylor (Beth))

We've had a great first two weeks, and are off on a trip to Science Oxford tomorrow!

What a great couple of weeks we have had so far in St Fred's High! The children have settled so well into following their secondary style timetable and independently being ready for each lesson.

We have been incredibly busy so far: working on developing a bakery in Maths, checking skills in Biology, exploring the achievements of Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary in Humanities, looking at the book "The Explorer" in English and opening our big question "Does it matter what you believe about creation?" in RE.

We have had a fantastic trip to the Oxford Universities, having a great time having a go at a variety of sciences, including the iodine clock in Chemistry and the Astronomy dome in Physics. The demonstrations from BAE systems was also a fantastic opportunity last week, where we learnt all about the incredible jobs linked to STEM that allow us to explore from the depths of the ocean all the way to outer space. We also enjoyed creating radio adverts for useless products with the Explore Learning team on Friday, and can't wait to have them back again this week.

    This week:

Tomorrow we are going to Science Oxford, for another incredible day of experiments and exploring. We are walking there and back so please make sure your child is dressed for the weather. We are leaving school at 8:35 and are aiming to be back soon after 3 (leave time is 2:00-2:15 and will take us about an hour to walk back). Please make sure your child also has a packed lunch and a water bottle (or 2 if small).

On Thursday we will be beginning the RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) part of our PSHE. This does involve talking about reproduction as well puberty and relationships. For a number of the sessions the boys and girls will be taught separately.  This will be taking place during tutor time on a Thursday and Friday afternoons. If you have any questions or queries about this please contact us via the Explorers email.

On Friday we will be joined again by Explore Learning, this time with a maths based workshop.
