The Quay Reflect and Review

Term 6 Week 2

Construction and Bridges

We have had a fantastic week exploring the topic of construction and bridges.

The children enjoyed investigating different types of bridges and learning about what makes structures strong and stable. Through a range of practical activities, they have been able to design, build, test and improve their own constructions. Moorhens class built bridges from Lego and Coots class looked at bridges in The Hundred Decker Bus and tried to make them, but they ended up as surfboards!

Some other activities included:

  • Building bridges using blocks, construction kits and recycled materials.

  • Exploring which shapes make the strongest structures.

  • Testing bridges to see how much weight they could hold.

  • Looking at photographs of famous bridges from around the world.

  • Working together to solve problems and share ideas.

Alongside our topic work, we have been developing important skills such as:

  • Communication and language

  • Turn-taking and teamwork

  • Problem-solving

  • Fine motor skills

  • Perseverance and resilience when things do not work the first time

Next week we will continue our exploration of construction through activities that encourage creativity, investigation and collaborative play. Coot's new book will be Lets Build a House!

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!
