This Week – What We Have Been Learning
This week, we have been exploring the fiction book Milo Imagines the World, written by Matt De La Pena and illustrated by Christian Robinson. The children have been developing their oracy skills by looking closely at the illustrations, sharing their observations, making predictions and thinking of questions they would like to ask about the main character, Milo.
The children have been practising using capital letters at the beginning of sentences and full stops at the end. We have also been focusing on grammar and sentence writing, exploring different writing techniques to make our sentences more interesting and engaging.
In Maths, the children have been developing their addition and subtraction skills, focusing on number bonds to 10, counting backwards and solving problems using practical resources.
Year 3 children have been building on their knowledge by adding and subtracting 1s, 10s and 100s, including crossing 10 and 100. Through practical activities and discussions, they have been strengthening their mental maths skills, recognising number patterns and explaining their strategies with growing confidence.
In Design and Technology, the children have been learning about recipes, identifying ingredients and equipment, and exploring how different vegetables can be combined to make soup.
In PSHE, the children have been learning about healthy eating and exploring the Eatwell Guide. They have identified different food groups and discussed the importance of a balanced diet, including the proportions of each food group needed to keep our bodies healthy.
Next week, we will continue exploring Milo Imagines the World. We will focus on responding to illustrations and looking closely at the language used in the story. The children will have opportunities to discuss interesting words and phrases, develop their vocabulary and use descriptive language in their own writing.
In Maths, the children will be exploring parts and wholes, learning how numbers can be split into smaller parts and using this understanding to develop their subtraction skills.
Year 3 children will continue developing their addition and subtraction skills, focusing on crossing 10 and 100 when adding and subtracting 1s and 10s. They will also explore number patterns, make connections between calculations and practise adding two numbers without exchanging.
In Design and Technology, we will be putting our learning into practice by making our own soup. The children will have opportunities to explore ingredients, follow a simple recipe and use appropriate equipment to prepare their soup. We will also discuss the importance of hygiene and safety when preparing food.
As we returned from the half-term holiday, the children have shown great courage in settling back into school routines and reconnecting with their learning. It has been lovely to see them supporting one another, showing kindness, helping their friends and bringing joy to everyone around them.
All children have visited the school library and have chosen a book to take home and enjoy. We encourage you to share these books together and make reading an enjoyable part of your home routine.
While reading, try asking your child questions to develop their understanding and comprehension, such as:
How do you think the character is feeling? Why?
What has happened in the story so far?
What do you think might happen next?
Can you tell me about your favourite part?
Why do you think the character did that?
These simple conversations will help develop your child's vocabulary, imagination and understanding of stories.
Rivers have been given Maths home learning activities focusing on addition and subtraction. Please encourage your child to complete the activities, talking through their mathematical thinking and explaining how they worked out their answers.
You can also support their learning through everyday activities, such as counting objects, adding small amounts together and finding how many are left when objects are taken away.
Please continue to practise the phonics sounds and words your child has been learning in class. Encourage your child to use their phonics knowledge to sound out unfamiliar words when reading and writing at home.
Please ensure children bring their reading books and any necessary school equipment to school each day. Thank you for supporting us in encouraging good routines and independence.
Please continue to check the school website calendar for the most up-to-date information about school events.
Thank you for your continued support. We really appreciate your partnership in supporting your child's learning and development. We look forward to another exciting week of learning.
