We are so proud of the children this week. They approached the week with confidence, positivity, and determination, particularly as they completed their Phonics Screening Checks. The children came into school ready to do their very best, showing resilience and perseverance throughout. They have worked incredibly hard, and we are proud of every single child in Islands for the effort they have put into their learning. Please continue to practise phonics at home to support your child's reading and writing development. Regular practice of sounds, special friends, and blending words will make a huge difference as they continue their learning journey.
In Science, we have been extending our learning about food chains and how living things depend on one another for survival. The children explored the concept of energy transfer, learning that energy moves through a food chain from one living thing to another. To help us understand this idea, we used torches to represent energy travelling through a food chain. This practical demonstration helped the children visualise how energy starts with the Sun and is transferred through plants and animals. The children asked thoughtful questions and showed great curiosity as they developed their scientific understanding.
As musicians, we have continued working hard on our Magic Flute songs. The children are becoming increasingly confident with the lyrics, actions, and melodies, and it has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm during rehearsals. They are beginning to sing with greater expression and confidence, and their hard work is really starting to pay off. We are looking forward to seeing their continued progress over the coming weeks.
As mathematicians, the children have been working hard on different areas of learning across the phase. In Year 1, the children have been exploring place value within 100, using practical resources to build, compare, and represent numbers. They have been developing their understanding of tens and ones and learning how numbers are structured. In Year 2, the children have been focusing on time, learning to tell the time to the hour, half hour, quarter past, quarter to, and beyond. They have been applying these skills to real-life contexts and discussing how we use time throughout our daily routines.
As it is our termly assessment week next week, the children have been working exceptionally hard in class to prepare. These assessments help us understand what the children know and can do, allowing us to identify the next steps in their learning. We have been reminding the children that the most important thing is to try their best and show all of the wonderful learning they have been doing this term.
Have a wonderful weekend, and we look forward to another successful week of learning in Islands!
