What a fantastic first week back we have had in Islands! The children have returned with positive attitudes, ready to learn and eager to engage with all of the exciting opportunities this term has to offer. We have packed a lot into the week and are incredibly proud of the effort and enthusiasm shown by all the children.
As writers, we have begun exploring our new English texts. In Tahiti, the children have started their work on The Great Fire of London, immersing themselves in the historical context of the story and exploring the key features of a diary entry. They have discussed how diaries help us record thoughts, feelings, and events from a personal perspective, and have begun identifying the language and structure used by diary writers.
In Sumatra, the children have started The Secret Sky Garden. They have been exploring themes of caring for the environment and thinking deeply about the messages within the story. The children have been analysing illustrations, discussing how pictures can communicate emotions, ideas, and meaning beyond the words on the page. They have shown fantastic inference skills and have enjoyed sharing their interpretations with one another.
As scientists, we have continued our learning about plants and how they grow. This week, the children explored the concept of hydroponics and learned that plants can grow without soil if they have the right conditions. We planted cress seeds and have been carefully looking after them by providing plenty of light and water. The children have enjoyed making predictions about what will happen and discussing what plants need to survive and thrive. We are all very excited to begin observing changes and watching our seeds grow over the coming weeks.
As musicians, we have continued rehearsing for The Magic Flute. The children are growing in confidence with the songs and actions and are beginning to perform with increasing expression and enthusiasm. It has been wonderful to see them supporting one another and developing their performance skills as they work towards this exciting production.
A significant focus this week has also been preparing for the Phonics Screening Check, which takes place next week. The children have been working immensely hard both in class and in their phonics groups, showing determination and resilience as they practise their reading skills. We want to give every child the very best opportunity to succeed, so please continue to practise at home over the weekend and throughout next week. The resources sent home throughout the year, including the phonics spinner, sound mats, and flashcards, are all excellent tools for supporting your child. Remember to encourage them to spot the special friends, say the sounds, and then blend the word confidently.
We wish all of the children the very best for next week. We are incredibly proud of the hard work they have put in and know they will do their best.
Have a wonderful weekend, and we look forward to another successful week of learning! 🌟
